What all you are going to get in iOS 12

I always eagerly wait for Apple WWDC events, I love their style of explanation and launching their new products and software. So, this year 2018 WWDC  was organized between June4-June8 in San Jose. The venue is the McEnery Convention Center, same as last year.

Event keynote started by Tim Cook in where he introduced all the latest updates for iOS 12 and the new macOS. In this event, we will get to know only related to Software upgrades but not any hardware products were introduced expect watch strap. Let’s hope some physical products may launch sooner.

Announcements made at WWDC 2018

1) iOS 12

2) macOS Mojave

3) Watch OS5

4) tv OS12

Let’s look at some features of all these upgrades…

1) iOS 12

A) Performance and Stability:

However, No matter what may be the software upgrade, without performance and stability, it doesn’t make any sense. So, Apple had especially focused on Performance and stability in iOS 12.

Apple had claimed that it had doubled its performance, in order to make iPads and iPhones faster and more responsive. This is particularly true of older devices.

The iPhone 6 Plus, for instance, sees substantial speed boosts with the iOS 12 update. Apps load up to 40% faster; the keyboard comes up 50% faster. Sliding to take a photo is up to 70% faster.

The performance gains are all about optimising the system when under load, Apple said. iOS 12 ramps up performance immediately when it’s needed, then ramps it down when not needed to preserve battery life.

B) Launching ARKit2(Augmented Reality):

First of all, We need to have some knowledge about AR... So, in short, AR is the fusion of real and digital world into one, by overlapping digital information onto surrounding environment.

Apple announced a new file format for augmented reality, called USDZ.

This means developers and designers can create an AR ‘experience’ in this format, then send it via Mail, load it to websites, share it across a system and so on. You can view it immediately – “like AR quick look”, Federighi said.

There will be native USDZ support in Adobe Creative Cloud, covering apps such as Photoshop.

Apple demonstrated the clever measurement tools made possible by ARKit. You can view a real-world object using your iPhone’s camera, moreover, if you view any rectangular object in your house and system will automatically recognize the shape and give you measurements.

We can even experience AR technology in News applications as we can zoom in and can feel the real world images and lots of websites even display AR content too…  such as the Fender website offering configuration options, letting you see your guitar in the real world, at real size.

Finally, ARKit will allow shared experiences. In AR games, for example, two players on separate iPads will be able to separately observe the gameplay from their viewpoint (and a third, neutral observer will be able to views things separately too).

C) Photos:

We got pretty good updates in iOS 11. You can search for photos based on names and many other features were added already and even more, categories added in iOS 12.

iOS 12 thinks about photo searches before you do, offering search suggestions: places you’ve taken photos, events, categories such as hiking. Photos index millions of events, and you can use this to find photos you took at that event.

It also tries to predict what photos you’d like to share. It pre-ticks photos that it thinks you’ll want to share, and people to share them with. Ingeniously, their phone then searches for photos at the same event and suggests sending them back.

Finally, there’s a new tab in Photos: For You. This shows featured photos, ‘On This Day’, Effects Suggestions, shared album activity and more.

D) Siri:

A very cool feature has been added to Siri… Let’s understand this feature by an example… Let’s take the meditation application for instance, in iOS 11 to open any application we must say Siri, the name of the application to open it. But in iOS 12 we can now create voice shortcuts for the separate application, we can assign voice shortcut of ” Need some relaxation” or any which you like to any particular application, like say… You have assigned ” Need some relaxation” for meditation app, next time when you say Siri ” Need some relaxation” then automatically Meditation app will be opened. Cool right?!

E) Apple even focused on upgrading its inbuilt apps…:

1)  News:

News has had a redesign to make it more suitable for iPad use. It gets a new Browse tab, which Apple says makes it easier to jump to favourites. And there’s a new sidebar.

2) Stocks:

Those who use stocks regularly may like this feature…

Firstly, that Apple News is coming to Stocks. Business news headlines will appear within the app, allowing you to click and see the full article without leaving Stocks.

This will make the most sense on the larger screen of an iPad, which is the second update: Stocks is coming to iPad at last! In this format, you’ll be able to view your stocks on the left, and financial news on the right.

3) Voice memos:

This too has been redesigned to be easier to use. And it’s also coming to iPad!

4) iBooks:

Now Apple had renamed iBooks as Apple Books… New feature added to Apple Books i.e, you can continue reading of any book where you left earlier. It saves time!

5) CarPlay:

Now supports third-party navigation apps. Pretty Good!!

6) Do not disturb:

In this busy world, time is more valuable, getting distracting by your phone makes less productive.

Read:    How to avoid distraction and to make yourself more productive.

The new feature, Do not disturb Bedtime, if you enable this you won’t get all notification during the bedtime hours and even when you just switch on the screen, to view all notification tap ” Do not disturb” again in notification centre to turn off.

And there are more updates for Do Not Disturb. You can set an ending for a DND: when you leave somewhere, or at a specified time.

F) Notifications:

Now you have much control over notification you receive…Siri even suggests you turn off Notification which you don’t use. You will be getting grouped notifications which makes easy to look over if you have many notifications on your screen. This feature makes sense!

G) Usage monitoring, limits and allowance.

You can get screentime reports even for application, impressive right?! How much time you had spent on the particular application. It also tells you which apps send the most notifications. All this information could be handy in letting you decide how to adjust your usage.

You have control over limit usage of the particular application if you set an Instagram usage limit of 1 Hour, you will be notified when time runs off, which is helpful and at the same, it’s annoying.. hehehe…

H) Messages:

This update is only for iPhone X users, the major fascinating feature is Animoji. There are four new Animoji: a ghost, a koala, a tiger and a T-Rex. And for all the Animoji, you’ll now be able to stick your tongue out and have the animation reflect that (iOS 11 couldn’t recognise tongues).

At the end of the Animoji drawer you’ll now see a plus sign, and this for creating your own images. These are called Memoji personalised Animoji of yourself (or whoever you like, really). Apple showed off a huge range of personalisation options.

I) Facetime:

One main change here: group FaceTime, with up to 32 participants.

The interface is weird and is going to take some getting used to, but it’s quite clever too: it automatically resizes to make a participant’s box larger when they’re speaking.

Which iPads & iPhones can run iOS 12?

All the devices that could run iOS 11 can also run iOS 12. That means:

  • iPad Pro (10.5), iPad Pro (12.9, 2017)

2) macOS Mojave

Apple has announced that the next version of macOS – macOS 10.14 – will be given the name Mojave (that’s pronounced as Mo Harvey)

All users can get OS during the launch of new iPhones in the month of September or October.

Let’s see some features of OS…

a) Dark Mode:

The Dark Mode in Mojave, shown below in the Calendar app, will be applied to all elements of the interface, in every app, system-wide. Users can choose whether to turn it on.

Showcasing the new system-wide dark appearance, Apple’s Craig Federighi explained that the dark shade “extends to the windows and the chrome.” Adding that it’s “Great not just for photography, but also if working in a dark environment.”

The developers in the keynote audience got a first look at the redesigned dark mode version of Xcode.

B) Desktop:

This feature is simply super… Most of us save our work on the desktop in the format of documents, images, videos and many… Sometimes, we are too lazy to make folders for images, videos and others, but in the latest update, it automatically arranges itself.

Feature… Dynamic desktop which helps to change wallpaper automatically according to the timing…( Evening related wallpaper in the evening timing.)

C) Finder

The great news is that this new Finder view will give you more than just a preview of the picture, document, or whatever it is you are trying to find.

As a result, you could preview (or Quick Look at) a PDF, and be using the Markup tools add your signature without even opening up the Preview app.

WWDC keynote Apple demonstrated these quick actions that you can use on the current photo – for example, rotating or cropping an image from inside the finder.

You will even be able to trim video from within QuickLook.

D) Screenshots:

After taking a screenshot, you can edit the taken screenshot within the preview which saves time and energy. Apple will also be adding a tool for screen capturing video. Currently, this is available via the QuickTime app, so we imagine it is going to simplify the process.

E) Mojave: New apps:

1) News app

The News app is also coming to the Mac.

News will have all the stores you can currently read on your iOS device, including Top Stories, Trending Stories, sections that are personalised for you. A sidebar will allow users to jump straight into the channels that they follow.

2) Voice Memos(Voice recorder):

One of the basic and must have feature in every smartphone which is now introduced to the Mac but with a catch, you won’t be able to record with your Mac instead you can instantly listen to the recording which you have recorded from your phone.

3) Home:

The Home app is also coming to the Mac.

Users will be able to monitor their gadgets, including video cameras, thermostats, and the like, as well as controling the devices using the Siri voice assistant.

4) Safari:

Whenever you visit any online movie website? Once try… You won’t again visit that again, because those websites are filled with lot’s of pop-ups and annoying link ads which are damn irritating and which you’re not going to see in this update. Peace!! Safari is set to become even more challenging for advertisers as Apple makes it even easier to turn off cookies.

5) Mac App Store:

Like YouTube, you can play the little preview of the video by moving the cursor over it as same you can view apps preview to know what type of game it is. Even you can get some tutorials in App store.

Before getting Mojave, you need to check whether your system is compatible or not…
